How much is one pip worth for a forex position?

Pip value translates a small exchange-rate movement into account currency. It depends on position size, pip size and the conversion relationship represented by the entered exchange rate.

Converting a quote movement into money

Enter position units, pip size, the quote-to-account currency conversion rate and the number of pips moved. Pip size multiplied by units gives value in the quote currency, which is then converted into the account currency.

Total profit or loss multiplies the converted pip value by the signed pip movement. The conversion rate is supplied by the user and no live foreign-exchange data is retrieved.

Position size, pip size and exchange rate

Pip value in quote currency = Pip size × UnitsPip value = Pip value in quote currency × Conversion rateTotal = Pip value × Pips

Pricing a multi-pip move

The default case combines lot size and price information to calculate the monetary value of a one-pip move. It then scales that value to the number of pips entered.

Value of one pip$10.00
Profit / loss on the move$250.00
Pip value in quote currency$10.00
Per mini lot$1.00

How quantity changes every pip

Use pip value to translate a stop or target distance into money. Increasing the position size raises the value of every pip proportionally.

Pair conventions and account currency

Currency-pair conventions differ, especially for JPY pairs and accounts denominated in a third currency. Make sure the pip size and conversion rate match the pair being modelled.

  • The entered pip size matches the quoted currency pair.
  • The conversion rate remains constant over the illustrated move.
  • Spread, commission, swaps and execution slippage are excluded.

Quick answers

Frequently asked questions

What pip size should I enter?

Use the pip size appropriate to the quoted pair and broker convention, commonly 0.0001 for many pairs and 0.01 for many yen pairs.

Why is a conversion rate required?

The pip is first valued in the quote currency, so the entered conversion rate translates it into the account currency.

Can I enter a negative number of pips?

Yes. A negative pip movement produces a negative total result while pip value itself remains based on position size.
